Plastic…Fantastic?

Selected for the Creative Construction Exhibition in Christchurch, New Zealand. Plastic…Fantastic explores the pollution of the oceans and humans impact on the environment. Micro plastic fibres have been found in marine life tissue and part of the human food chain.

“Plastic… Fantastic?”

We use plastic for it’s convenience, and then pollute the planet instead of recycling the plastic. Microscopic plastic fragments enter the water system in multiple ways, from synthetic fibre clothing, micro beads, as well as the fragmenting of larger pieces of plastic. Globally, microplastic pollution has become so invasive and ubiquitous – it’s estimated eight million tonnes of plastics now enter the sea each year – that the United Nations has likened its impacts to climate change.

Research has shown that the New Zealand Green Lipped Mussel and other kaimoana have microscopic plastic fibres in their tissue. Humans are now eating their pollution. What we do to the planet, we do to ourselves.
